I was recently speaking with Luke Closs of the Vancouver Hack Space Society aka VHS. VHS has been growing, despite their alley location. I had mentioned that several “maker” acquaintances were still a bit hesitant about the space, especially regarding bringing in their kids. Here are Luke’s thoughts on the location, new space & membership growth.

I’ve written before about supporting the community with dollars. I just signed up for a $25/month membership with VHS. Hack Hut also has $50 / month associate memberships that I’ll be looking into.

How are you stepping up to support the community?

What is this thing?

Well, right now it is Boris and Mack tumbling links and hosting guest posts (thanks to David Gratton for “16th place is not good enough for Vancouver”) related to the theme of Vancouver (Tech) being Awesome.

Come join the fun.

I’ve linked to this chart before — an interactive buying vs. renting calculator. “Better” in this case means you make more money - it doesn’t cover off fuzzy things like feelings.

Also, you are reading GreaterFool.ca, right?

Video that Ian Bell helped put together about Vancouver tech. Too bad it links to BCTIA as the “community” link.

File under startup ecosystem. By Jesse Heaslip. I still need to read this a couple more times and digest it. He’s not wrong, but I don’t think he’s completely right, either :)

The HTML5 event on the weekend looked to be excellent. This is Christian Heilmann’s write up.

Real estate costs and zoning are screwing the creative class in Vancouver. The “runway” for a self-funded startup in Vancouver is 3 times shorter because rent is 3 times higher.

Very cool blog showing original and present day photos of buildings around Vancouver.
